We have carried out asbestos removal and demolition contracts for Perth and Kinross Council since our inception in 2007, working on many of the schools within their council area.

Because of this locality we have often been called upon to carry out emergency work within 24 hours to either stop the spread of asbestos or to make a dangerous structure safe again.

When work building the New Alyth Primary School was completed we tendered for and was awarded the partial demolition of the old structure, and strip-out of the single storey Victorian listed building. The refurbishment and demolition survey identified asbestos-containing thermal insulation debris to the attic spaces and below the floors, as is expected in buildings such as this. However, during the works, further asbestos debris was found within the cavities of the internal walls.

Even more was then found under the concrete sub floor where it appeared that any extra asbestos at the time of application had simply been thrown into the solum and concrete poured on top. As we do not have to subcontract any of the works, we were able to react immediately to provide costings for the asbestos removal and also to start the paperwork for removal.

Continuous communication between Gowrie Contracts and the main contractors; Marshall Construction and the client; Perth and Kinross Council, ensured the project remained on track.
