If you suspect the presence of asbestos in your home or building, then it’s imperative that you don’t attempt to remove this yourself and instead contact professional contractors to carry out the asbestos removal for you - such as us here at Gowrie Contracts.
But, how do we go about removing it safely, then how is it safely disposed of following removal? Read on as we discuss this process in more detail.
When handling and removing asbestos from a premises, there are some precautions that should first be taken. Firstly, the area in question should be totally cleared of other objects; any objects that cannot be reasonably cleared will be securely and wholly covered with thick polythene sheeting.
This sheeting will also be used alongside timber to create an isolated area where the removal will take place. This area will also be airlocked, ensuring any and all airborne asbestos fibres are contained.
There are certain techniques that can and may be used to further reduce the amount of fibres that are released into the air, such as controlled wetting techniques like spraying or injections.
The licensed contractor will then remove the asbestos from the isolated area, securely double bagging it and sealing it in asbestos waste bags.
They will follow stringent decontamination procedures following the completion of the removal and the previously sealed off area will be environmentally cleaned once the asbestos waste has been removed, clearing it of the remaining debris.
Following the asbestos removal, the bagged contaminated waste will be appropriately labelled according to regulations and deposited at a specialist waste disposal site that is licensed to dispose of asbestos, which it’s transported to a sealed container in a specialist van.
Upon arriving at the transfer station, it will then be transferred from the container in the van to a lockable skip specifically for asbestos.
Due to its hazardous nature, asbestos waste can only be disposed of at a landfill site licensed to hold hazardous waste (including a specific permit to hold asbestos). It will be transported to such a site in the lockable skip it’s stored in whilst at the transfer station, where it will then be buried.
Sites where asbestos and other hazardous waste is buried are heavily monitored for potential leaks or contamination.
