How Is Asbestos Removed?

Gowrie Contracts Ltd • Oct 04, 2022

If your building or property was constructed before the 2000s, it could likely contain asbestos. This is a very dangerous but naturally occurring fibre that was used for insulation, flooring, roofing and even sprayed on floors and walls. If asbestos is found in your home or property during renovation or construction, you need to find asbestos experts to safely remove it.

Asbestos won’t cause you any harm unless it is disturbed or disrupted but if it is, it can release tiny fibres that get into your lungs and lead to illness. Exposure to asbestos fibres can cause damage to your lungs and lung lining over time and it can take years for the damage to become apparent.

If you need asbestos experts to remove asbestos in your home, here’s how they do it.

The asbestos removal process

If asbestos experts are taking charge of the removal process they will either recommend encapsulation or abatement, depending on the condition of the asbestos materials. Encapsulation involves covering the asbestos in a sealant to prevent any fibres from becoming loose. Although, if the damage is too severe, the materials may need to be completely removed.

  1. Turn off any HVAC units and seal any vents to prevent fibres from becoming airborne.
  2. Seal the work area with plastic sheeting.
  3. Clean the workspace with wet clean-up tools and HEPA vacuums.
  4. Place all materials in clearly marked and air-tight containers.

The experts will need to wear full-face respirators and coveralls to protect themselves from any asbestos. There are also required protocols to ensure decontamination. For example, workers need to completely remove any soiled clothes and ensure they are contained. They must change and shower in a clean room away from the work area before they can change into their normal clothes.

How much does asbestos removal cost?

If you suspect there is asbestos in your home, you will first need to undergo a survey. This can cost anywhere from £200-£1,000. After this, an asbestos expert can come to your property to safely remove the asbestos. This costs on average £150 per m2.
