If you’ve ever moved house, carried out building work or explored an abandoned property, you’ll probably have heard of asbestos. For quite some time this nasty material was used for a multitude of purposes before its true dangers were discovered.
From insulation and walls to ceilings and roofing panels, asbestos can be found in a wide range of building applications. If disturbed, asbestos poses a number of health risks to those nearby, so it must be efficiently removed and disposed of. Of course, the dangers of this troublesome material weren’t always known. Here at Gowrie Contracts Ltd, we’ve put together a brief guide to the surprising history of asbestos.
Read on to find out more.
Let’s start with the basics; technically speaking, asbestos is actually a naturally occurring carcinogenic mineral. There are six different types of asbestos, each is made up of long, thin fibrous crystals. These thin fibres contain millions of microscopic particles which are released into the atmosphere when disturbed.
The first uses of asbestos can be dated as far back as 4000 BC. During this period, the material was used for candle wicks owing to its flammable qualities. Later, asbestos began to be used for a range of applications in European countries such as Finland. Here it was used to strengthen ceramic pots and other similar items.
Fast forward a few thousand years and asbestos production reached an industrial level. During the 1800s and 1900s, asbestos mining rose in popularity and the material was used across numerous industries. Most notably, asbestos found its way into walls and ceilings up and down the UK as a seemingly effective form of insulation.
Following decades of asbestos mining and manufacturing, research began unearthing its carcinogenic properties. By the 1960s, the relationship between asbestos and lung cancer was clearly understood, and yet significant changes in regulations were not introduced until the 1990s! By 1999, every type of asbestos was banned within the UK.
Today, we’re well aware of the dangers associated with asbestos; this material should be treated with great care and handled by experts only. If you require safe and efficient asbestos removal services, look no further.
