Common Places Where Asbestos Can Be Found In Homes

May 29, 2024

Asbestos could be present in various areas of your home, without you even realising. Understanding where asbestos might be in your home is essential for ensuring that you are living in a safe environment. Our blog dives into some of the health risks that asbestos poses, and what you should be looking out for in your home. To find out more, keep on reading.

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring material that was commonly used between 1930 and 1980 in both domestic and commercial buildings. It was widely used for its fire resistant properties and insulation qualities, but after more research, asbestos wasn’t all it seemed to be.

In the 1990s, and finally in 1999, asbestos was banned across the UK because of its detrimental health risks. Asbestos has been known to cause a range of serious health problems, including lung cancer in individuals who were exposed to the material.

Where Should I Look Out For Asbestos In My Home?

Homes built in the mid-1980s onwards are less likely to have asbestos built into them, but it’s still important to be safe and check whether your home has asbestos. You can have a professional survey carried out to check whether you have asbestos in your home. Read below to learn about the key things you should look out for.

  • Asbestos can be concealed in the roof area of your home, in places like the pipe lagging, in the cement around your water tank or even loose-fill insulation.
  • Textured coatings and decorative finishes on your walls can also be a hiding spot for asbestos fibres. These can sometimes be on walls and usually on ceilings.
  • Asbestos Insulating Boards (AIB) were previously used for fireproofing, and could be another risk to your health. You might find these boards behind your fuse box, partition walls and in your airing cupboard.
  • Old vinyl floor tiles as well as your toilet cistern can also be places where asbestos is hiding. Asbestos may also be found in your bath panels, and these fibres can be seriously harmful.
