Why Asbestos Should Be Handled Professionally

Asbestos was discovered to impose serious health risks to those who were exposed to it and inhaled it. Lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis are some of the most common health issues associated with asbestos exposure.

Regulations and professional asbestos services are designed to reduce public exposure to asbestos, and carry out
asbestos removals with safe precautions. Read below to learn more about how professional asbestos removal is carried out.

Asbestos Removal: The Process

When it comes to handling asbestos, there are key regulations in place to help professionals manage the asbestos safely.

  • Planning Carefully - Professionals will assess the size and severity of the project, as they may need to apply for local permits. Careful assessments will be carried out before the project begins.
  • Preparing The Area - The area being worked on will be covered with plastic sheeting and negative air pressure units to prevent any contamination. Warning signs will be put up, and any surfaces will also be covered in plastic sheeting.
  • PPE - Workers MUST wear respirators and protective clothing to prevent asbestos exposure.
  • Safety Protocols - HVAC systems will need to be disabled to prevent the circulation of asbestos fibres. Workers will also need to use wet wipes and HEPA hoovers to clean asbestos off immovable objects. This equipment is used to stop any fibres from spreading and reaching others.
  • Handling & Disposing - Asbestos containing materials are wetted, before any removal efforts are made. Workers must be wearing a respirator and PPE when working with any contaminated materials. Asbestos generated will be wetted and double bagged, before being placed in a 6 millimetre plastic bag. This is then placed into a leak tight container, with the appropriate labels, before going to a special landfill site.
  • Decontamination Procedures - Decontamination units are installed, where professionals will remove any contaminated clothing, shoes or tools. They will then follow specific steps to ensure that no asbestos fibres are spread into their homes.
