Project Overview:
The contract works comprised the demolition of three 4-storey sandstone tenement blocks, including the external stairwells, basements, and foundations. The remaining mid-gable wall was fitted with an External Wall Insulation system to complete the works.
For the demolition, the tenement flats were all soft-stripped – all internal doors, woodwork, cupboards, kitchens, bathrooms, fixtures and fittings, and services were removed back to the bare structure. All materials were segregated into the appropriate waste streams.
The roofs and floors were then removed, starting from the roof and top floor, working downwards to leave the building shell ready for demolition. Due to the location on a busy street and bus route, the top two floors, chimney stacks, and gables were hand-demolished to ensure no stone was dislodged outwards. Once the height was reduced, demolition was completed mechanically using one of Gowrie’s 36T Komatsu PC360 demolition-spec excavators.
This machine continued to remove the basements and grub-up the foundations. A second excavator, a Doosan 140DX, serviced the larger excavator by cleaning up behind it and processing the demolished material into skips for removal from the site by tipper.
