Our blog takes a closer look at the health implications of asbestos, and why it's so dangerous to anyone who might encounter it. To learn more about asbestos and health, keep on reading.

Asbestos: Understanding The Dangers

Asbestos is a harmful material, which still kills up to 5,000 workers every year. Exposure to asbestos can be detrimental to our health, especially if inhaled.

Primarily used from the 1930s all the way through to the 90s, asbestos was used in homes and commercial buildings because of its natural fireproofing and insulation properties. However, after discovering that inhaling asbestos could create detrimental effects, it was finally banned in 1999.

Common Asbestos Related Illnesses

Asbestos has been known to be the root cause of many serious illnesses and issues. Some of the most common asbestos related illnesses include:

●    Lung Cancer - Lung cancer can be caused by asbestos, and is a result of exposure to the material. It will cause developments in the lung tissue, which will grow to be tumours. Lung cancer is a serious illness that can be life threatening, and even result in death.

●    Asbestosis - This is another chronic lung disease that is caused by the inhaling of asbestos fibres. Prolonged exposure to these tissues leads to scarring on the lung tissue, as well as a shortness of breath. The symptoms of asbestosis can range from mild to severe.

●    Mesothelioma - Another problem caused in the lining of the lungs, causes plaque to develop in the lining. It can often be confused for lung cancer, but Mesothelioma is a malignant plaque on the inside lining of the lung, rather than a tumour.

●    Pleural Disease - Pleural disorders are conditions that impact the tissue on the outside of the lungs, and lines the chest cavity. Pleural disease can be caused by inhaling asbestos fibres and being exposed to them over long periods.
